Green spaces can be hard to come by in the city and this can be stress inducing for some especially those who appreciate a yard with large trees, flowering shrubs and open lawns. For this Center City residence, Urban Jungle fabricated and installed custom-made planters, green roofs, and native plant material to create conditions that encourage nature in the city. In the fourth-floor courtyard, we installed Ipe pavers and earth tone urns with sage colored evergreens and herbs. On the fifth-floor courtyard, we installed a green roof inter-planted with native perennials. At the roof deck, we covered the waterproofing with Ipe pedestal pavers. We installed custom-made planters and a plant palette including herbs, vegetables and perennials that are known to attract pollinators. From the roof deck the client has views of the ships docked along the Delaware River waterfront and IM Pei’s Society Hill Towers. All areas are irrigated with a low-maintenance drip system. This set of large planters was installed along an entire block of new housing in Fishtown. The Flyers orange brings a vibrant pop of color to an otherwise neutral-toned building. In addition to providing color and greenery, they mask unsightly utility meters.

For this Center City residence, Urban Jungle fabricated and installed custom-made planters, green roofs, and native plant material to create conditions that encourage nature in the city. The house has multiple balconies, a courtyard and a roof deck. In a planter at the front door, we placed Wissahickon Schist boulders and flowering succulents. On the south-facing second-floor balcony, we placed custom-made hand-painted planters with native Honeysuckle and Jasmine vines to travel up a monofilament ladder. The Jasmine flowers in the spring and early summer and then the Honeysuckle blooms through the summer and into the early fall. The north-facing second-floor balcony received a similar treatment. Here, we installed custom-made hand-painted planters with ivy panels to screen the adjacent development. In the kitchen, the ivy reflects off of the glass surfaces producing a magical effect.
